whip it good
Very familiar lyrics to one of the great songs of my youth.
Probably, not all would agree. But when I am fortunate enough to be in a car and it comes on the radio, I blast it. My kids give each other an eye-roll, but after a minute or two, start moving and grooving to the beat. I always consider this a psych song. A song that revs you up for something. The band Devo sure did wear funny hats but they got their message across..."just whip it, whip it good." Oh, by the way the song makes no sense.
******************************************
Here are the lyrics:
Crack that whip
Give the past a slip
Step on a crack
Break your momma's back
When a problem comes along
You must whip it
Before the cream sets out too long
You must whip it
When something's goin' wrong
You must whip it
Chorus:
Now whip it
into shape
shape it up
get straight
go forward
move ahead
try to detect it
it's not too late
to whip it
whip it good.
When a good time turns around
You must whip it
You will never live it down
Unless you whip it
No one gets away
Until they whip it
I say whip it
Whip it good
I say whip it
Whip it good.
Repeat from beginning.

I'm stuck
Monday, April 26, 2010
There is a great song by John Fogarty that I love to listen to, and it is always played on the radio as opening day arrives. It is called Centerfield.
Well, beat the drum and hold the phone-the sun came out today!
We're born again, there's new grass on the field.
A'roundin' third and headed for home, it's a brown-eyed handsome man.
Anyone can understand the way I feel.
Chorus:
Oh, put me in coach- I'm ready to play today;
Put me in coach- I'm ready to play today;
Look at me I can be Centerfield.
Well I spent some time in the Mudville Nine, watchin it from the bench;
You know I took some lumps when Mighty Casey struck out.
So Say Hey Willie, tell Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio;
Don't say "it ain't so", you know the time is now
Repeat Chorus
Yeah! I got it, I got it!
Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and a brand -new pair of shoes;
You know I think it's time I give this game a ride.
Just hit the ball, and touch them all- a moment in the sun;
(pop) It's gone and you can tell that one goodbye!

long beautiful...hair
Odd topic perhaps, but a topic that all can discuss.
It comes in colors, lengths, styles, textures, softness, sheen, or one can simply be bald.
My husband has a saying, "Better grey than neigh."
My husband had gorgeous thick hair that is greying around his temples, but has kept his color from behind. Unfortunately when he sees a picture of himself he only sees the grey in the front!
My son also has thick silky hair that grows soooo fast. It actually does grow like a weed.
One of my daughters had her head shaved as a baby, and her hair took ages to grow in. She needs to keep it a certain length for it to look her best. I love when she blows it out. She always looks great. And then there is the blonde. We really don't know where it came from, but the youngest of the bunch has long curly blond hair. People used to ask me if she was mine!
There is a play on Broadway that is a revival, and believe it or not it has the same name as our topic: HAIR.
She asks me why...I'm just a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and night; Hair that's a fright.
I'm hairy high and low,
Don't ask me why; don't know!
It's not for lack of bread
Like the Grateful Dead; darling
Gimme a head with hair, long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming, steaming, flaxen, waxen
Give me down to there, hair!
Shoulder length, longer (hair!0
Here baby, there mama, everywhere daddy daddy
Chorus:
Hair!(hair, hair, hair, hair,hair,hair)
Flow it, Show it;
Long as God can grow it, My hair!
Let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas, a hive for bees
A nest for birds, there ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder of my
CHORUS
I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy , ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy, shining
Gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted; Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled and spaghetied!
O-oh, Say can you see; my eyes if you can,
Then my hair's too short!
Down to here, down to there,
Down to where, down to there;
It stops by itself!
doo doo doo doo doot-doot doo doo doot
They'll be ga-ga at the go-go
when they see me in my toga
My toga made of blond , brillianted, Biblical hair
My hair like Jesus wore it
Hallelujah I adore it
Hallelujah Mary loved her son
Why don't my Mother loves me?

Where is the sun????
Nora: Wow, it is raining cats and dogs.
All kidding aside, I have empathy and sympathy for the many people who have flooded homes. I have to be careful not to do laundry, and to remind my family to take quick showers, but I thankfully have none of the real worries of so many that have water rushing into their homes.
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here

Holiday
The song goes something like this: (to listen and watch,take a look at Madonna's video at the bottom of my blog)
Holiday Celebrate
Holiday Celebrate
If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate
Just one day out of life
It would be, it would be so nice
Everybody spread the word
We're gonna have a celebration
All across the world
In every nation
It's time for the good times
Forget about the bad times, oh yeah
One day to come together
To release the pressure
We need a holiday
You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days
Put your troubles down
It's time to celebrate
Let love shine
And we will find
A way to come together
And make things better
We need a holiday.
I started to think about the words in a very different way than I did as a teenager. It was a dancing song back in the day.
I was now thinking about how nice it was to take a break from every day routines, and be with my family. It was a quiet celebration for us as we simply were able to enjoy each other's company. Everyone really does needs a holiday, even if it is just for one day.

Thinking....
I live with a teenager, and am acutely aware that the music I listened to back in the day greatly varies from today's top hits. I am going to base this blog for the middle school experience. I will now have to rummage in my mind for the music that I listened to in sixth through eighth grade.
I do recall that the songs had a storyline...not merely screaming, or trash talk.
My plan is to write out the lyrics, and highlight phrases, or words that my students may be unfamiliar with. Their assignment would be to choose a song and try to express the gist of the tune in English, and if the student was a bit more proficient transcribe the song from their home language into English.
Now to think of some songs.....
